T
he Spartans were up against the Wellington Wolves in a rematch of the final two years prior, which the Wolves won in a close game 20-13. This was a huge chance at redemption after falling short in last year’s final after an unbeaten regular season. Turning up on finals day with only 15 players to take on a pack of Wolves with numbers closer to 40, was to quote a veteran Spartan in the halftime changing rooms “The very definition of a Spartan, few against many”. What transpired on that day was the stuff of fairytales. After trying very hard throughout the season with a small group of committed players but continuously falling short, every single player that walked out on the field found a little something extra to play for in the championship game. Right from the opening kickoff everyone took every chance that came their way and produced one of the greatest performances in Spartan history. There was a kickoff returned for a TD by Scott Thomson on the first play of the game. This was followed by a rushing TD by QB Daniel Rongen and then a punt return TD as well by the games MVP Chris Toms. To cap the game off in the fourth quarter, every person gathered there to watch witnessed one of the best interceptions anyone will ever see returned to the house for the game sealing score by Jonny Connor. After last season’s disappointment in the final this was a huge relief for most players, in particular for a lot of the veterans. It was the second title for the Spartans since their inception in 2003 and the way in which the team performed in the final will be remembered for a very long time. A massive thank you must go to all the clubs Sponsors and Supporters who have helped and cheered for us throughout a very tough season. We hope to see everyone back.
